More on 201, 304 and 316 Stainless Steel:

Now, it’s important to note that not all stainless steel is the same. When you consider that this non-corrosive metal is used for bridges, automotive exhaust systems, monuments and sculptures, architecture and transportation bodies, it’s clear that there are various strengths of this metal. In the stainless steel banding industry, we stick to the higher-grade categories, including 201, 304 and 316.

201 stainless steel is the industry standard for banding, clamping and fastening, and it’s an exceptionally strong form of SS. At ISO Stainless, we recommend 201 for sign hanging, banding and strapping and hose clamps. This type of metal will stand strong, even through the toughest wind storms. It is also most cost-effective since it contains a lesser amount of nickel. While it is durable and flexible, SS 201 does not have the same level of corrosion resistance as the 300 Series. With less nickel and more manganese, corrosion resistance is weakened.

300 Series is best for applications where additional corrosion resistance is needed, such as in marine applications. In fact, Type 316 is also referred to as “marine grade stainless.” Both 304 and 316 are ideal for transportation, welding and sign brackets. This series is more expensive because of the increase in nickel, which is around 8 to 10 percent, but the added rust resistance is what sets the 300 Series
